Ek wil enkele gedeeltes uit 40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Augsburg Books) hanteer.
Julle is die sout vir die aarde. Let wel: nie julle behoort die sout te wees nie, maar julle is. Die dissipels het geen keuse nie – hulle kan nie besluit of hulle sout wil wees of nie. Hierdie is ook nie ‘n oproep op hulle om sout te wees nie. Hulle is die sout of hulle dit nou wil wees of nie. Hoe het hulle hierdie sout geword? Deur die roeping wat na hulle gekom het. Hier staan ook nie dat hulle die sout het nie – hulle is die sout.

Geheime
As jy die woord geheim in ‘n preek hoor of in die Bybel lees, wat doen jy? In ‘n preek oor 1 Timoteus 3:16 – Die groot geheim van Goddelikheid – het Calvyn gesê dat daar twee dinge is wat ons moet onthou:

Gehoorsaamheid en Genade
Tim Keller het by The Gospel Coalition’s Women’s Conference hieroor gepraat. Hy glo dat die volgorde belangrik is. God het nie vir die Israeliete die wet – die tien gebooie – gegee en gevra dat hulle moet sê dat hulle alles sal doen wat die wet sê nie. Daarna sê Hy nie: “Goed, nou sal Ek julle uit Egipte lei en julle van slawerny verlos,” nie. God het hulle eers gered en toe gesê: “Omdat Ek julle gered het, moet julle my gehoorsaam.”
